U of T Hatefest--Using the Freedom of Speech and our Canadian Values to Incite to Hatred and Racism

Letter to Ministers and Members of Parliament:

"take measures to prevent individuals and groups from cynically using the freedom of speech and our Canadian values to incite to hatred and racism and justify terrorism and the killings of the innocents."

Re: The racist hatred legitimized by U of T posted by Al Gordon, 2005/02/03
February 3, 2005.

[. . . .] In but the first two days of their incitingly titled "Israeli Apartheid Week", the ASC has proceeded to spew forth hatred and preach for the "destruction of the Jewish state" to the shock and horror of many as well as in front of media from across the globe. As one Jewish U of T professor lamented upon seeing the hateful banners put up by the ASC in the Sydney Smith building "should I wear a yellow Star of David entering this building in which I work?"

One of the most blatant incidents of inciting hatred came at the very first event where the ASC put up a "mock refugee tent" (11am, January 31st) in the lobby of the Sydney Smith building and used it to display "Palestinian martyr posters" glorifying "Shahids", some of them minors. In addition, the emblems of several terrorist organizations were displayed including Al-Aqsa Martyr's Brigade which is recognized as a terrorist entity by the government of Canada (. . . ). Many students felt offended by the promotion of terror on campus which flies in the face of Canadian democratic values.

Furthermore, at this terrorism display, visibly Jewish students who ventured into their tent were asked to "stop occupying" it. Even more discriminatory was the fact that ASC members asked only visibly Jewish students to pay for their hand-outs while non Jewish students were given them freely. [. . . . ]

Additionally, at the event at 7pm on January 31st, another speaker proceeded to explain to the audience her race theory of how "white people oppress darker people". When asked to clarify her racial ideologies, she declined to comment about what people of other skin tones do.

The ASC refused to allow recording devices to document their lectures without giving a reason. Members of administration later suggested that this was probably due to the fact that some of the ASC speakers and members were possibly illegal immigrants or participants in criminal activities.

Ask them anything that is wrong with Palestinian society and they will say the same repetitive line: "it's because of the occupation." Listening to that, one can easily think they were talking about 1967 borders, not true. When pressed to answer what the occupation means at an event I attended, one of the group leaders named Mustaffa replied: "the majority of Palestinians feel it's from the river to the sea. Who am I to deny them that?" He was received with a thunderous applause. Without admitting to it, Mustaffa was advocating the evacuation and murder of the Jewish population in the Middle East. To say "who am I to deny them that?" is a tacit endorsement. It is the same as agreeing to it. He could have said he supported 1967, but he didn't. Need more proof? Earlier in the talk, Mustaffa prided himself on having killed Jews in Jenin. This guy was invited by the group so it is reasonable to say they share his hatred towards the Jewish state and its inhabitants.[. . . . ]

This is happening in Canada? In one of our most prestigious universities?

Why do I read of Palestinians so featured? What has Canada imported along with its 'students'?
